In 2010, Jay Leno authored an article for Popular Mechanics in which he detailed his experience restoring a vintage Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing Coupe.
The article was published online. “It was an old race car that its owners put in a storage container out in the California desert in the late 1970s,” he wrote.
“The location of the container was out in the middle of the desert.” And the Mercedes was left there for decades without being moved. I’m just the third person to own it.
And it is what gives it its unique quality.” He then went on to provide a glowing review of the vehicle’s specifications, saying things like, ”
The 300SL was ahead of its time, with a tubular space frame, fully independent suspension, a fuel-injected SOHC Six, those cool gullwing doors, and a lot of racing history.”
Although it is unknown how much Leno spent for the vehicle, he stands to make a significant profit off of it if he decides to put it up for sale.
In 2014, an auction firm named Barrett-Jackson sold a restored 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe for a total price of $2,090,000, which included a fee for the buyer’s commission.
It is safe to say that the passage of time, inflation, and the fact that Leno has a famous face might, his attractiveness would sell for even more.
According to the DuPont Registry, Jay Leno is the happy owner of one of the most amazing automotive collections in the world. His collection contains 181 automobiles and 160 motorbikes, and its combined value is estimated to be $52M.
