According to Billy Joel, a legend of rock and roll, home can be the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the early morning dew in Indiana, or high up in the hills of California; home is just another term for you.
The lyrics of “You’re My Home” were written by Joel more than 30 years before he constructed the 57-foot Vendetta, but they continue to ring true for his one-of-a-kind commuter yacht.
The iconic commuter has been freshly redesigned by the present owners after undergoing a two-year refurbishment, and it is now ready for some California daydreaming.
Joel envisioned the custom Vendetta, which was constructed in 2005 by Derecktor Shipyards and was built to his specifications, with a very specific purpose: to take him from his property on the shore of Long Island to the locations of his choice on Long Island Sound, all the way down to New York City.
A secondary objective of Joel’s was for the Vendetta to be faster and have a greater range than any previous commuter boat that has ever operated in the Long Island Sound.
Joel remarked at the time that the boat was being constructed, “What we’re trying to do with this thing is basically combine the speed and durability of a PT boat with the look and feel of a ’30s-era commuter, and with a low profile.” This was the goal of the project.
Joel commissioned Doug Zurn, the same naval architect who had previously created the singer’s successful Shelter Island 38, to design this very unusual yacht.
The Shelter Island 38 was a luxury cruiser of 50 knots and had a cool-looking torpedo back end. Joel commissioned Doug Zurn to design this extremely special yacht.
A few years later, in 2016, two boat-owning businessmen from California came across Joel’s vintage beauty on the East Coast.
They purchased Vendetta almost immediately after falling head over heels in love with her appearance, performance, and overall quality of construction. They then moved Vendetta to the West Coast.
