Analysts predict that if singer Grimes and his three kids relocate to California, billionaire Elon Musk will be required to pay a hefty sum of alimony.
The wealthy tech investor Elon Musk recently sued his “ex-wife” for relocating unexpectedly to California during a custody dispute in Texas.
Grimes, a Canadian artist, and Mr. Musk started dating in 2018. The pair hasn’t made their marriage public until recently. But starting in the middle of 2022, tensions in their relationship surfaced as Musk and Grimes kept announcing their split and subsequent reconciliation.
The female singer and the 52-year-old businessman are requesting shared custody of the child. As of right now, the pair is parents to three children: girl Exa Dark Siderael (2021), boy Tau Techno Mechanicus (2023), and boy X Æ A-Xii Musk (2020).
Accusing the singer of “establishing a parent-child relationship” with three children, Mr. Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against Grimes in Texas in September 2023. A few weeks later, the singer filed a California lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk.
The 35-year-old musician informed a Texas judge in October 2023 that Mr. Musk was only the parent of his 3-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii.
Family law specialists told The Insider that since child support laws vary by state, Mr. Elon Musk may face serious repercussions from a trial in California.
The child support cap in Texas only requires Mr. Musk to pay $2,760 per month for three children. California is not currently in charge of regulating this cap. As a result, if the case is settled here, the richest man on the planet probably has to pay a hefty sum of money.
Businessman Elon Musk submitted an updated petition on November 20th, arguing that since Texas is the home state of the children, it should have jurisdiction over the custody dispute. Thus, according to the owner of the electric car firm Tesla, Grimes and the three kids had lived in Texas for a minimum of six months running.
Grimes, however, claimed that as of December 31, 2022, the three kids had relocated to California to live with her.
According to experts, it will take several months for singer Grimes and billionaire Elon Musk to demonstrate which state the kids actually “belong” in.
